30 Jul DIY Essential Oil Perfume
Is your perfume toxic? According to the Environmental Working Group, traditional perfumes are made up of any number of combinations of 3,100 stock chemical ingredients. These ingredients are often kept secret from the consumer because the Federal Fair Packaging and Labeling Act of 1973 exempts fragrance from labeling requirements because they are considered “trade secrets”.
These fragrance chemicals can build up in human tissue and are associated with hormone disruption, allergic reactions, an immunotoxicity. Some of these chemicals are even showing up in the cord blood of babies.
I don’t know about you, but synthetic fragrance gives me a migraine. I can’t go near the cleaning sections of Target or Costco and can’t use traditional hair products due to the strong smells. Unfortunately, I find that fragrance is hard for most women to let go of, because we all want to smell good.
Did you know you can actually make your own perfume with essential oils? It’s incredibly easy. This is how I made mine:

You will need:
- Glass Perfume Bottle
- 4 1/2 tsp Vodka (I use Tito’s Vodka)
- 2 tsp distilled water
- 30 Drops essential oil(s) of choice
- Unbleached coffee filter
Mix the vodka, distilled water, and essential oils in a glass bottle and let it sit for two weeks, shaking the bottle 1-3 times per day. After two weeks, filter the perfume through a coffee filter and re-bottle it. Easy peasy! I used doTERRA’s ‘Peace’ oil for mine, as it is my favorite smell of all time. Another fun one is the “Anthropologie Blend” using doTERRA’s Citrus Bliss, White Fir, and Grapefruit. Have fun and get creative!
P.S. If DIY isn’t your cup of tea, there is a perfume company I LOVE called Lurk that makes perfumes with essential oils. Their perfumes are 100% pure essential oils with no additives, synthetics, compounds, fixatives, preservatives, GMO’s, phthalates, or parabens and they smell AMAZING. My favorite scent is ‘BS 003’
Have you ever made your own perfume? Which oils did you use? I’d love some fresh ideas!
